Partnerships should benefit both parties, and that's just what's happened with RAM Surgical, a locally owned diverse supplier working with Methodist in supply chain management.

"Methodist takes pride in being able to support diverse suppliers wherever possible – this is one of our ongoing goals," says Jan Lea, supply chain VP.  Methodist has achieved a 12 percent overall spend with diverse suppliers, while many other hospitals struggle to reach an average of 3 percent. This is particularly significant because Methodist only purchases goods and services from diverse suppliers with competitive prices and excellent service.

RAM, owned and operated by Adrian Davis, was introduced to Methodist in 2006 when the Methodist Mansfield was about to open. At that time, RAM was a fledgling company that concentrated on specialty surgical instruments. Adrian rose to the occasion to compete and provide specialty instruments to that Methodist Mansfield.

Now, the partnership has grown to include myriad other products, with Methodist projected to spend in excess of $1 million with RAM this year.

"RAM is a deeply valued diversity supplier for us, having grown along with us to now carry a broad array of essential medical supplies across our system," Jan says.

From the other side, Adrian agrees that doing business with Methodist has challenged his company to meet health care product needs in the Dallas–Fort Worth area.

"Methodist has helped RAM to better understand the hospital business along the way," he says. "Because of this, RAM now provides products to other large hospitals in the area as well."
